VIDEO: ‘Racist’ remarks spark school protest

Pupils from Hoërskool Reynopark in Witbank, Mpumalanga, embarked on a protest this morning after alleged racist incidents at the school.

Pupils, along with their parents, gathered outside the school holding placards and chanting,Witbank News reported.

It is believed the protest came after a Grade 9 teacher allegedly called one of the pupils a “baboon” while in class on Thursday.

The teacher was then reportedly phoned by the child’s mother, who was also called a “baboon” by the teacher.

On Monday, TimesLive posted an audio clip of the supposed phone exchange between the teacher and the parent.

The incident was later reported at the Witbank Police Station.

Pupils from the school were reportedly also calling for the resignations of the principal and other teachers, who they claimed had racially abused them as well.

A spokesperson for the school said a meeting was being held with the department of education and could not provide further comment.

Last month, Curro Roodeplaat Private School in Pretoria was accused of racism after it emerged that it had reportedly been assigning pupils to classes based on their race.

A petition was signed by about 30 parents who wanted wanted to know why some classes were made up of only black children, while the white pupils were kept together.

The regional manager at Curro Holdings denied claims of racial segregation and stated that it was easier for pupils to make friends with children of their own culture.
