Videos: 2 passengers shot dead in N1 bus robbery in Limpopo
Two passengers were killed and others robbed when gunmen opened fire inside a cross-border bus on the N1 near Mokopane.
The Mokopane police in Limpopo have launched a manhunt for a group of armed suspects following a deadly bus robbery along the N1 near the Nylplaza Tollgate on Wednesday night.
Polokwane Review reports that, according to Limpopo police, the incident occurred at around 21:40 when two armed men, who were among the passengers, opened fire inside the bus, killing a man and a woman before robbing passengers.
Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says the Zimbabwean bus driver (42) was transporting 54 passengers from Randfontein to Zimbabwe, with several pick-up stops including Midrand and Pretoria.
“It is alleged that the gunmen, who were seated at the back of the bus, suddenly drew their weapons and pointed them at passengers. When one passenger tried to disarm them, a struggle ensued, and multiple shots were fired.
“A 30-year-old male passenger and a 25-year-old female died at the scene. The suspects then robbed passengers of cash and cellphones before fleeing in a vehicle that had been following the bus,” Ledwaba says.
Cases of murder and armed robbery have been opened.
The Chronicle, a Zimbabwean publication, posted a video last night showing the passengers disembarking after arriving in Bulawayo.
Victims of the Delta Bus hijacking incident, in which two people were shot dead, have safely arrived in Bulawayo following the ordeal that occurred on Wednesday evening in South Africa.
