Videos: Girl shot during political unrest outside Polokwane

A child was shot and two others injured when political tension between people wearing ANC and EFF regalia in Juju Valley escalated into violence.

A girl, whose age has not yet been confirmed, is currently receiving medical treatment for a gunshot wound sustained during a clash between residents wearing EFF and ANC T-shirts in Juju Valley, outside Polokwane, yesterday afternoon.

She is one of three Juju Valley residents taken to the hospital following the political altercation.

According to Mabotse Mothiba of the Community Policing Forum, the other individuals sustained a broken leg and a dislocated arm respectively. The source of the gunshots remains unclear.

The ANC Peter Mokaba region had scheduled several events in Juju Valley yesterday, including the handover of 47 gazebos to 45 branches and a door-to-door campaign. Concurrently, the EFF was hosting a soccer tournament in the area.

Videos sent to the Polokwane Review-Observer show residents in ANC attire throwing stones at an approaching crowd. Another video captures burning tyres and the sound of gunshots.

Juju Valley is the last branch the EFF holds in Seshego (in the Polokwane municipal area) after losing Ward 10 to the ANC in a recent by-election.
