Viral gun video leads to Tembisa police raid

Crime Intelligence officers launched a targeted tracing operation in Gauteng after footage emerged on social media showing women handling weapons.

Two men are set to appear in court next week after a widely circulated video of women recklessly cocking firearms tipped off authorities to a alleged criminal hideout in Tembisa. While the suspects face charges over a recovered hijacked vehicle and illegal guns and ammunition, a manhunt remains underway for the individuals captured in the footage.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the tracing operation was launched by the Gauteng Crime Intelligence Unit immediately after the circulation of the video.

The firearms displayed in the footage were seized during the raid and are suspected to be unlicensed.

The two arrested men, aged 21 and 34, will appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court next week to face charges of illegal possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, alongside possession of a hijacked vehicle.

Earlier, Mathe issued a stern warning, noting that the reckless handling of firearms poses a severe danger to the public.

“Firearms are not toys and should never be used recklessly, displayed irresponsibly or handled for entertainment purposes,” Mathe said.
