Wanted bogus estate agent captured at rented office in Durban
A 47-year-old man, who was wanted by the eThekwini District Task Team for allegedly posing as an estate agent, was finally apprehended at his rented office in the Windermere area, last week.
It is alleged that the suspect would post houses from Umlazi and the greater Durban area on social media without the home owners knowledge or consent.
“The investigation revealed that the suspect would make the unsuspecting and desperate clients sign an offer to purchase agreement on houses by showing them pictures. The price of the house that was about to be fraudulently sold to different people without the owners knowledge was R220 000,” said provincial police spokeswoman, Cpt Gwala.
His laptop, cellphone and fraudulent documents were seized by the police and he was also linked to a case of fraud after the complainant saw an advert of their house on sale on social media.
“We would like to caution members of the community not to fall prey to such housing scams. The community is advised to verify the identity of estate agents and to conduct more research on the homes offered for sale before they sign any documents,” said Cpt Gwala in closing.
