WATCH: Arrested Mogalakwena officials, company directors in court

The streets were blocked off as two groups, those for and those against, await the outcome of the case against Mogalakwena Municipality officials and various company directors.

Outside the court affected residents and members of the Mogalakwena Concerned and Affected Communities, Cosatu, Mokopane Task Team, Sanco and the ANC Youth League have gathered to show their support.

Fifteen officials, who face charges related to fraud and corruption, will make their first court appearance in the Mokopane Magistrate’s Court this morning (September 1).

A take-down operation orchestrated by the Directorate for Priority Crimes’ (Hawks) at the Mogalakwena Municipality on Monday (August 30) led to the arrest of 13 people, while a further two were arrested later in the afternoon.

The arrested include senior officials and company directors as well as 13 juristic persons (companies).

At the time Hawks Limpopo spokesperson Capt Matimba Maluleke said the officials reportedly received gratification from service providers and that other companies were paid money for services not rendered. “The municipality suffered a loss of over R15m due to these illegal activities.”
