Watch: Cash-in-transit van bombed outside Empangeni

A cash vehicle was bombed in a CIT heist along the R34 outside Empangeni, while a light motor vehicle also caught on fire.

The R34 near Nkwalini in the uThungulu district of KZN was a no-go zone this morning after a cash-in-transit (CIT) vehicle was bombed.

The incident occurred near KwaMbhekaphansi just after 09:00.

Reports from the scene indicate the CIT vehicle was destroyed during the explosion, and a light motor vehicle also caught on fire.

The number of suspects is not clear at this stage, neither is it clear as to whether or not the guards were injured during the attack.

According to Emasangeni reserve residents, a loud bang was heard from the vicinity of the incident, which they thought was a truck tyre bursting.

Traffic was blocked in both directions as emergency personnel tended to the scene.

King Cetshwayo Cluster police spokesperson Captain Siyanda Shangase confirms the incident. “At this stage, it is unclear as to how this incident occurred,” he says.
