Watch: Couriers robbed at Pinetown mall as metro police explain viral incident

Durban metro police have defended officers’ calm response after armed robbers ordered their vehicle to move during a mall heist in Pinetown.

Metro police have issued a statement following widespread social media criticism after an armed robbery at a Pinetown shopping centre yesterday, during which a metro police vehicle is seen in a video being instructed by robbers to drive off.

Metro Police clarified circumstances

Highway Mail reports that Durban Metro Police spokesperson Colonel Boysie Zungu said the officers were conducting a routine centre patrol at the time of the incident.

“It is important to note that no complaint of armed robbery had been reported prior to the ambush,” he said.

Zungu commended the officers for staying calm and exercising restraint when confronted by heavily armed suspects. He emphasised that their composed response prevented a potentially dangerous confrontation that could have resulted in unnecessary injuries or fatalities.

Courier team targeted

Pinetown SAPS communications officer Jennifer Naidu confirmed that a case of armed robbery has been opened.

According to Naidu, it is alleged that a courier team was delivering cellular devices to various stores inside Pinecrest Shopping Centre.

“They were escorted by an on-duty armed security officer. Approximately five armed suspects approached the team, threatened the security officer and courier employees, and robbed them of multiple cellphones as well as the security officer’s service pistol. No shots were fired and no injuries were reported.”

Naidu said investigations are continuing to track down the suspects. She urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour.

“Any suspicious activity should be reported immediately to Radio Control on 10111 / 082 557 8282 / 031 325 6794 / 031 325 6795.”
