Watch: Epic lions vs buffalo fight goes viral again

Footage of a dramatic lion versus buffalo battle has resurfaced, showing an intense struggle with a surprising conclusion.

History is full of great battles, from the Roman legions clashing with Celtic tribes to the Springboks squaring off against the All Blacks. Yet none carry the same ‘roar’ as footage of an intense battle between lions and buffalo.

The fight was filmed last October, but the footage is again circulating. This renewed interest was sparked yesterday, when wildlife photographer Deon Kelbrick uploaded an alternative angle of the great battle.

Since being published just over 14 hours ago, the video has attracted more than 300 000 views.

Kelbrick’s caption reads: “This sighting will stay with me forever; without a doubt one of the best I’ve ever experienced. It happened last year at MalaMala Game Reserve, when the Kambula pride brought down five buffalo from this herd but managed to hold onto only one. The intense back-and-forth between the pride and the massive herd lasted for over an hour. Just as the lions thought they’d finally secured their hard-earned meal, two dominant males stormed in and chased them off, leaving the pride empty-handed.”

Similar footage was also posted on the game reserve’s YouTube account:
