Watch: Gauteng rocked by 5.0 magnitude tremor
The 5.0 magnitude earthquake's epicenter was near Alberton and took place about 10km underground.
Residents of Gauteng woke up to a seismic event as the earth trembled under their feet in the early morning hours today.
Earthquake Track recorded a 5.0 magnitude tremor 10km underground in Gauteng just before 02:38.
Residents in Pretoria as well as parts of Johannesburg reported being awoken by their furniture and homes shaking. They took to social media to share their experiences.

The epicenter is believed to be near Alberton according to the United States Geological Survey website.
Although no immediate reports of injuries to people have been reported, eNCA reported about structural damage on the East Rand.

Last year in February, an earthquake of magnitude 2.7 was reported in the Centurion area near Pretoria.
