Watch: Hippos come out to play in Richards Bay

While hippo grazing in a residential suburb is wonderful to witness, community members must remember that they are the most dangerous land animal.

South Africans are used to seeing roaming dogs and cats on our roadways, but the sight of giant hippos nonchalantly munching on green grass as cars whizz by never fails to cause a stir.

In Richards Bay on KZN’s north coast, Zululand Observer regularly reports on these herbivores, who often come to say howdy to the town’s residents and, each time they do, videos and photos do the rounds.

Their favourite stomping ground is from Steel Bridge to the Arboretum traffic lights.

The latest video – featuring two hippos in Msimbithi Street in Arboretum, en route to Mzingazi Lake, was shared by Zululand Observer on its Facebook page yesterday.

Residents are advised to exercise caution in the vicinity.

In 2019, the municipality erected several warning signs along the John Ross Parkway after hippos regularly frequented the banks of the Mzingazi canal.

The animals often cause traffic issues in the town, as people stop to admire them.

Hippos are also common night visitors to St Lucia, an hour’s drive north of Richards Bay.
