Watch: Joburg CBD experiences another explosion
Videos are circulating on social media after an explosion in Braamfontein today.
Another explosion occurred in Johannesburg’s CBD this afternoon – less than two months after the terrifying event in Lilian Ngoyi Street (formerly known as Bree Street).
The incident on July 19 claimed one life, while 48 people were injured.
City of Johannesburg manager Floyd Brink said at the time that methane gas was the cause of the fatal explosion.
Another bang
Today – at around 15:30 on the corner of Bertha and De Korte streets in Braamfontein – another blast was noted, with reports suggesting an explosion in the gas pipeline being the cause of the incident.
Spokesperson for Johannesburg Emergency Services Robert Mulaudzi said in an X (formerly Twitter) post that an Egoli gas truck was affected by the fire. “It looks like the officials were working along the pipeline when the fire started.
Investigations will be conducted to determine what caused the fire.”

Johannesburg Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda was also on the scene.

Thus far, no serious injuries have been reported. The fire has since been extinguished and Mulaudzi congratulated fire fighters with a job well done.
