Watch: Kurt Darren’s ‘Alleen Leen Leen’ blasts from taxi’s speakers
An Afrikaans 'sokkie treffer' in South Africa's most popular mode of public transportation? Yes, please.
Social media has been taken by storm after a classic Afrikaans song by Kurt Darren was played in a taxi on the N12 on its way to Potchefstroom from Klerksdorp in the North West.
The occasion? Exhausted runners taking up race organisers’ offer of a free shuttle back to the starting line after the gruelling 50km North West N12 Ultra Marathon.
A video posted by The Running Mann on Facebook has been played over 280 000 times since it was posted last month and has received love on the social media platform.
The person who took the video is Stuart Mann (48) from River Club, Sandton, who ran his 268th marathon on the day (May 4). It was his first time running the N12 marathon, which started at the NWU McArthur Stadium in Potchefstroom and finished at the Klerksdorp Recreation Centre.
Mann told Caxton Local Media that the other songs played during the drive were more traditional African music and that when Alleen Leen Leen started playing, the Afrikaans woman next to him started laughing. “When the song came on, she said something like: ‘O, gonna, it’s Kurt Darren!'”
He said the other passengers did not show too much reaction to the song or any of the other music, but adds: “I think they were all just tired after running 50km in the sun.”
Albeit that the Afrikaans tune, which has more than 222 000 plays on YouTube, was blaring on the speakers, few dance moves were on display. Mann says the artist isn’t to blame.
“It was quite quiet, but I don’t think you can blame Kurt for that. Most people would have gotten up at about 03:00 to drive through for the 06:00 start and were looking forward to getting home.”
