Watch: Miraculous escape after bakkie speeds into oncoming traffic on R40 in Mbombela

It is believed that the driver of a bakkie that was driven into oncoming traffic may have lost consciousness.

A video shows a white bakkie driving on the wrong side of the R40 near eBundu Lodge in Mbombela, losing control and overturning in the bushes earlier today.

According to Lowvelder, the occupants escaped unharmed when the vehicle eventually veered off the road while driving in oncoming traffic on the busy dual-carriageway between Mbombela and Rocky Drift.

Initial reports suggest the driver was unconscious and the passenger attempted to take control before the bakkie left the road.

ER24 paramedics say the driver and passenger sustained only minor injuries.

They were able to walk to another vehicle and were examined at the scene, with no hospital treatment required.

Moeti Mmusi, the spokesperson for the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, confirms they are aware of the video.

An investigation will be launched to determine the cause of the incident.

“We do not yet know why the driver was in oncoming traffic. We urge motorists to always drive cautiously and stay in their lanes to prevent accidents and injuries,” he says.
