WATCH: Bakkie loses control, overturns on R40 near eBundu Lodge in Mbombela

A vehicle travelling in oncoming traffic on the R40 narrowly escapes tragedy.

A video shows a white bakkie driving on the wrong side of the R40 near eBundu Lodge, losing control and overturning in the bushes earlier today, October 27.

The occupants escaped unharmed when the vehicle eventually veered off the road while driving in oncoming traffic on the busy dual-carriageway between Mbombela and Rocky Drift.

Initial reports suggest the driver was unconscious and the passenger attempted to take control before the bakkie left the road.

ER24 paramedics said both the driver and passenger sustained only minor injuries.

They were able to walk to another vehicle and were examined at the scene, with no hospital treatment required.

Moeti Mmusi, spokesperson for the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, confirmed they are aware of the video.

An investigation will be launched to determine the cause of the incident.

“We do not yet know why the driver was in oncoming traffic. We urge motorists to always drive cautiously and stay in their lanes to prevent accidents and injuries,” he said.
