Watch: Multiple-vehicle crash on N1 in Vanderbijlpark
The pile-up accident was allegedly caused due to limited visibility on the road due to a veld fire and strong winds.
In what an eyewitness described as a ‘scene out of a movie’, several vehicles were involved in a pile-up accident on the N1 near Vanderbijlpark yesterday (September 5).
Facebook user David Molemo Radebe posted a video of the scene. He said they stopped to help and then saw more vehicles colliding into the scene.
He described visibility as ‘close to none’ because of a grass fire next to the road and urged motorists to slow down when driving in such conditions.
Arrive Alive offered the following tips when driving near veld fires:
- Expect limited visibility due to smoke and possible slow-moving traffic. Reduce your speed drastically and drive with extreme caution.
- In poor visibility conditions, do not attempt to drive through thick smoke or flames. In many instances when drivers try to do this, they discover they have left the road surface, collide with stationary objects or vehicles or are in head-on collisions with other motorists attempting the same manoeuvre from the opposite directions.
- Switch on your headlights and hazards to ensure you are as visible as possible to others.
