A large area of the Witkruis Monument was destroyed in a massive wildfire that swept across the Zebediela area yesterday afternoon.

The annual cross-planting event took place at the monument yesterday but was interrupted as the blaze swept over part of the area.

A video on social media shows a large group of people at the monument as smoke billows from the top of the hill.

Emergency and fire services were dispatched to the scene to try and douse the blaze which wreaked havoc across five locations on the R101, R519 and N1.

According to information on the Polokwane Emergency Alerts WhatsApp group, several farms on the Zebediela road were also damaged in the blaze.
