Watch: Security officer dismissed after woman run over in Johannesburg

A distressing incident where a security vehicle reversed over a pedestrian in Glensan was caught on video.

A security officer has been dismissed after a video emerged showing a woman being run over, allegedly by him, in the residential area of Glensan, Johannesburg, last week.

The video, which was widely shared on social media, shows the woman wearing a bright pink jacket walking along a road in the suburb. Moments later, a vehicle belonging to Community Action Protection (Cap) is seen reversing along the road and colliding with her.

The impact causes the woman to fall to the ground, and the vehicle goes over her body before coming to a stop.

The woman can then be seen crawling out from underneath the vehicle as the security officer and his partner get out to check on her.

‘Troubling incident’

Gia Nicolaides, the media strategist for Cap, says they are aware of the video circulating online.

She describes the incident, which occurred last Monday, as ‘troubling’.

Nicolaides says the company is deeply distressed by what had occurred.

Investigation

“As soon as we became aware of this incident, we immediately instituted an internal investigation. The incident was not intentional and resulted purely from human error. Due to the severity, the staff member responsible was immediately dismissed,” she explains.

Nicolaides adds that the company’s senior executives reached out to the woman’s family as its primary concern is her well-being.

The extent of her injuries could not be established.

Apologies

“We extend our sincere apologies to her and her family during what is undoubtedly a traumatic time,” she says.

Nicolaides adds that the incident falls far short of the standards the company upholds.

“As an organisation entrusted with protecting lives and communities, we are devastated that a careless act by one of our own has placed a member of the public in harm’s way. Crime prevention and community safety are our absolute priorities,” she says.

Review of operation protocols

According to her, the company has multiple procedures in place to prevent incidents of this nature.

“We are conducting a thorough review of our operational protocols and driver conduct policies to ensure that lessons are learned and that additional safeguards are implemented to prevent an incident of this nature from ever happening again,” says Nicolaides.

She adds the company is co-operating with the relevant authorities.

The incident was reported to the Sandringham Police Station.

Gauteng police was approached for comment but none was received at the time of publishing.
