Watch: Truck looted following crash on Gauteng’s R21
While a driver was only slightly injured when his truck overturned on a highway, people at the accident scene started stealing the goods he was transporting.
Police are yet to make any arrests after an overturned truck was looted on the R21 near Olifantsfontein Road in Gauteng last night.
Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) spokesperson Thabiso Makgato says it is believed that ongoing roadworks in the area were the cause of the crash.
“The driver of the truck passed through excavation signage and the vehicle subsequently overturned.”
The truck driver sustained slight injuries and was treated on the scene.
As a result of the crash, goods being transported in the truck were strewn across the road and spectators began looting the items.

In a video posted online, a number of people can be seen grabbing items and running away.
Police officers and the EMPD closed the road to facilitate a clean-up.
“The road was re-opened at 02:00 this morning. No arrests were made on scene,” says Makgato.
