Western Cape man accused of trying to poison stray dogs

Police in Doringbaai have arrested a man on animal cruelty and firearm charges.

A 58-year-old man is due to appear in the Vredendal Magistrate’s Court today (November 6) on charges including animal cruelty after allegedly planning to poison stray dogs.

The man was arrested after being reported to police for allegedly throwing what appeared to be animal fat into a field next to Main Road in Doringbaai in the Western Cape on Tuesday (November 3).

Western Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel FC van Wyk said that when police approached the man, he had what appeared to be animal fat.

“Due to concerns that members of the public wanted to interfere at the scene, the suspect was escorted to the Doringbaai Police Station for further investigation.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect allegedly intended using the animal fat to poison stray dogs after reportedly suffering livestock losses due to dogs killing sheep on his farm,” said Van Wyk.

Firearms and ammunition seized

He said a search of the man’s vehicle also led to the seizure of two firearms, various rounds of ammunition and a bottle containing an unknown substance.

The man was charged with possession of unlicensed firearms, illegal possession of ammunition, animal cruelty, possession of an unlicensed motor vehicle and driving without a valid driver’s licence.
