Following frantic reports, the Durban Metro Service Search and Rescue Unit discovered a body in the water near Wedge Beach Pier at Lower Marine Parade this morning (August 5), reports Berea Mail.

Colonel Boysie Zungu, spokesperson for the Durban Metro, said, “Following a comprehensive safety assessment, members conducted a recovery operation and successfully recovered the body from the ocean. The deceased was respectfully brought ashore and handed over to the South African Police Service for further investigation.”

eThekwini District SAPS spokesperson Captain Carmen Rhynes confirmed the incident, saying, “At approximately 02:00 on Wednesday, August 5, SAPS Durban Search and Rescue (SAR) was activated following reports of a body floating in the water at Wedge Beach, Durban.

“Upon arrival, the body of an unknown female, believed to be approximately 35 years old, was located floating adjacent to the pier. Members of SAPS Durban Search and Rescue, together with Metro Search and Rescue, entered the water and successfully recovered the body.”

Rhynes added that an inquest docket has been registered at Durban Central SAPS. “The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation, and the deceased’s identity is yet to be established,” she said.
