Work to complete Limpopo Central Academic Hospital on track
A spokesperson from the Department of Health states construction on the R4.5b hospital is at 5%.
According to the national Health Department, construction of the Limpopo Central Academic Hospital is progressing according to the schedule.
Spokesperson Foster Mohale on Friday told Polokwane Observer that construction on the overall projects currently stands at 5%.
He said it is important to note that the different phases are at different progress stages.
“The bulk earthworks, for example, is at 93%, bulk storm water and bulk sewer at 19%, off-site external sewer at 58%, off-site external power supply at 54%, intake substation building at 40% and external boundary fence at 63% complete,” he remarked.
The hospital is viewed by Limpopo government as a milestone, as expressed by Premier Chupu Mathabatha and Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba.
In 2017, Ramathuba tabled a proposal to Treasury that funds be made available for construction of the hospital that would accommodate 688 beds.
In July 2023, the sod-turning ceremony was held at the 25ha of land near Edupark in Polokwane’s sports precinct on Webster Street.
The hospital is built at a cost of R4.5b and construction will continue until 2028, Mathabatha confirmed.
He added that an estimated 2 000 jobs would be created during the construction phase.
The quaternary facility will render services such as oncology, gynaecology, neonatal, paediatrics and cardiology among others, and attracts a range of specialists.
