Yellow level 4 weather warning issued for Gauteng

The main concerns are low-lying flood-prone areas, poor driving visibility and pooling of water on major roads.

A yellow level 4 weather warning has been issued for Gauteng following heavy rains accross the province today.

The South African Weather Service says the warning means that localised flooding of susceptible informal settlements and low lying roads are possible in flood-prone areas.

“A steep upper air system is expected to cause persistent widespread (80%) showers and thundershowers over Gauteng. The latest numerica models project rainfall amounts of between 25-45 mm which may result to flooding in some areas. The main concern will be low lying flood prone areas.

“The main concern will low lying flood prone areas, poor driving visibility and pooling of water on major roads. It is important to note that there is some uncertainty in the forecast (especially in the amount of rainfall).”

The service is monitoring the situation.
