Holiday roads: Is your car ready?

With just eight weeks until the holiday season, now’s the time to ensure your vehicle is in top-notch condition.

As the year draws to a close, many families are gearing up for well-deserved festive breaks. With so much to plan, it’s easy to overlook the importance of vehicle maintenance. However, a well-maintained car can significantly enhance your travel experience and ensure a safe and incident-free journey.

According to the Motor Industry Workshop Association (Miwa), neglecting vehicle maintenance can lead to unexpected breakdowns and accidents. Miwa recommends conducting a thorough vehicle inspection before hitting the road this holiday season to avoid such inconveniences.

Here are some essential checks to perform:

  • Insurance and licensing: Verify that your car insurance and license disc are up to date.
  • Lights and indicators: Ensure all lights, including headlights, fog lights, indicators and brake lights are functioning correctly.
  • Brakes: Check for signs of wear or damage and have your brakes inspected by a professional.
  • Safety equipment: Carry essential items like emergency triangles, a tyre kit, a torch, a reflective vest, extra water and a first-aid kit.
  • Tyres: Inflate tyres to the recommended pressure and check the tread depth.
  • Radiator: Monitor for fluid leaks or overheating, as these could indicate issues with the cooling system.
  • Fluid levels: Regularly check engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid and windshield washer fluid levels.
  • Wiper blades and windscreen: Ensure wiper blades are in good condition and the windscreen is crack-free.
  • Battery: Check battery connections, voltage, and for any warning signs.
  • Electronic components: Inspect air conditioning, radio, GPS, and sensors to ensure they are functioning properly.

By conducting these checks, you can significantly reduce the risk of breakdowns and accidents, ensuring a more enjoyable and stress-free holiday journey. Remember, a well-maintained vehicle is not only safer, but also more reliable.
