Keeping young drivers safe: Tips for parents

Handing your child the keys to their first car is a significant milestone, but comes with responsibilities.

Before you hand your child the keys to their first car, it is essential to teach them some basic safety precautions and what to do should an emergency present itself.

They should be taught to be aware of their surroundings, identify potential risks, and what to do when they realise they are being followed.

Vehicle tracking systems offer a safety net. They will alert you to potential theft attempts and enable you to locate the vehicle using real-time tracking.

“Vehicle tracking systems can offer similar protection to your home’s alarm system. It can warn you if anyone is trying to steal your (or your child’s) car and can help locate it when someone has taken it,” says Wahl Bartmann, CEO of the Fidelity Services Group.

Hijack prevention and response
• Avoid antagonism: Remain calm and non-threatening to reduce the risk of violence.
• Surrender peacefully: Follow the recommended steps for surrendering your vehicle without escalating the situation.

Additional tips for parents
• Ensure your child’s car is in good condition to minimise mechanical breakdowns.
• Verify that your child has adequate insurance coverage.
• You may consider driving and anti-hijack courses as being expensive, but its value should never be underestimated.

Make the time for this conversation with your child to ensure that they develop responsible driving habits and enjoy a safer driving experience.
