Safety first: Empowering disabled racers
Motorsport South Africa and the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile have taken significant steps to enhance safety for disabled racers, as highlighted by the story of quadriplegic off-road racer Jarrod Blackman.
Motorsport is dangerous but it should be accessible to everyone, regardless of physical ability.
The story of Jarrod Blackman, a quadriplegic off-road racer, highlights the importance of safety measures for disabled competitors.
With the support of Motorsport South Africa and the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), Blackman has received significant safety upgrades to his racing vehicle. These enhancements, including a custom-fit safety fuel cell, a state-of-the-art fire extinguisher system and specialised racing gear, have significantly improved his safety while racing.

The FIA’s Disability and Accessibility Commission has been instrumental in promoting inclusivity in motorsport. By developing guidelines and regulations for adapting vehicles, the commission has paved the way for more disabled drivers to participate in the sport.
Nathalie McGloin, the commission’s president, emphasises the progress made in disabled karting, particularly through the efforts of Fabio Visentin. His passion for the sport and his experience as a disabled driver have been instrumental in shaping new regulations and encouraging more disabled individuals to get involved in karting.
Blackman’s story is a testament to the power of safety and inclusion in motorsport. By prioritising safety and providing necessary accommodations, we can create a more inclusive and accessible sport for everyone.
