South African rally star secures 2025 FIA Rally programme spot
Max Smart is set to accelerate his career with a place in the prestigious FIA Rally Star programme for 2025.
Max Smart, a 22-year-old South African rally driver, was selected as one of three drivers to continue in the FIA Rally Star talent development programme for 2025.
“Max’s journey from local motorsport to international recognition in the FIA’s elite programme is a testament to his resilience, hard work and unwavering passion for racing,” says Vic Maharaj, Motorsport South Africa’s CEO.
Steve Harding, convenor of the MSA National selection programme for FIA Rally Star and the FIA Rally Star African Continental final, explains that the FIA Rally Star Programme, launched in 2019/20, aims to uncover and nurture young rally talent worldwide. “Through regional finals, virtual e-sports competitions and grassroots events, the programme has introduced talented drivers from diverse backgrounds to the sport,” he says.
Smart’s journey
Smart’s passion for speed and competition began at an early age, initially in motocross. This experience honed his skills in vehicle control, endurance and quick decision-making, preparing him for the mental and physical demands of rally racing.
His breakthrough came in 2022 when he won the African Continental final, securing a place in the FIA Rally Star Programme and the 2023 FIA Rally Star Training season. The training camp in Sardinia provided him with invaluable coaching in pace note techniques, rally car engineering, media skills and sports science.
In 2024, Smart made his debut in the Junior World Rally Championship (JWRC), highlighting his adaptability and perseverance on challenging European terrains. His impressive performance, including a podium finish in the Rally Italia Sardegna, earned him a reselection for the 2025 JWRC season.
FIA’s deputy president for sport, Robert Reid, praised Smart and the other selected drivers for their talent, determination and contribution to the success of the FIA Rally Star programme.

Looking ahead to 2025
With the support of Motorsport South Africa and the FIA, Smart is determined to push his limits and compete at the highest level. He aims to represent South Africa in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) and inspire the next generation of rally drivers.
“My journey has just begun, and I’m excited to continue representing South Africa on the world stage in 2025,” says Smart. “I’m grateful for the support and opportunities, and I’m determined to make the most of them.”
Maharaj concludes: “Max’s selection for another season in the JWRC is a significant achievement for South African motorsport. He is a fantastic ambassador for our country, and his journey inspires young drivers to pursue their dreams in rally racing.”
The 2025 FIA Junior WRC season kicks off with Rally Sweden from February 13 to 16.
