Suzuki Dzire achieves ‘significant’ top score in Global NCAP safety test

Launched for India and other emerging markets, the fresh-faced Maruti Suzuki Dzire has scored an impressive five-star Global NCAP safety rating.

A major improvement over the Global NCAP safety rating achieved by its predecessor, the recently revealed brand-new Maruti Suzuki Dzire has been awarded top honours for adult occupant safety in a recent Global NCAP test.

In addition to the five-star score the new Dzire achieved for the latter, the latest iteration of the brand’s compact sedan gained a four-star rating for child occupant safety; significant improvements over the two-star scores the previous model received for adult and child occupant safety. The new Dzire is equipped with six airbags, electronic stability control and hill-hold assist, among many other standard-fitment safety items.

Said David Ward, Executive President of the Towards Zero Foundation: “The new Dzire’s five-star rating sets a significant safety benchmark for Maruti Suzuki compared to the previous version of this model and others from Maruti we have tested. Global NCAP warmly welcomes this milestone voluntary test result.”

The box-fresh Dzire is equipped with the same 1.2l petrol engine as the new-generation Swift, which we had the opportunity to sample on an exclusive pre-launch drive. The naturally aspirated unit, which forms part of Suzuki’s Z-series family of powertrains, produces 60kW and 112N.m of torque. In the new Dzire, the Z12E unit can be had with a five-speed manual gearbox or an automated manual transmission (AMG) with the same number of cogs. As a reminder, the latest Swift has ditched its forebear’s AMT in favour of a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

CAR Magazine reached out to Suzuki Auto South Africa for comment on whether the model will make its way to local shores, and while they remained tight-lipped about official confirmation, we remain certain it will replace the outgoing model on the market.
