Gauteng to pilot ‘self-destructing’ number plates to combat crime
Gauteng's new number plates will feature advanced security elements, making them tamper-proof.
Gauteng is set to revolutionise its road safety and crime prevention efforts with the introduction of advanced number plates. These innovative plates, equipped with cutting-edge security features, are designed to deter vehicle-related crimes and streamline the licensing process.
The initiative, spearheaded by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, addresses a critical issue – the pervasive use of motor vehicles in criminal activities. From hijackings and theft to fraudulent activities, criminals often exploit vulnerable vehicle identification systems. The new plates aim to thwart these efforts by incorporating a self-destructing decal and a barcode for authentication. While this sounds like a ploy out of a James Bond flick, the barcode, linked to manufacturing information, enables authorities to verify the authenticity of each plate. Should anyone attempt to tamper with the plate, the self-destructing decal will render it unusable. Additionally, the bold red design of the plates and the inclusion of various security markings make them instantly recognisable and difficult to counterfeit.

The roll-out of these advanced plates is a step towards modernising Gauteng’s licensing system. The province’s dwindling supply of standard alphanumeric combinations has necessitated a more efficient and secure solution. By adopting this innovative technology, Gauteng not only enhances security but also streamlines the plate issuance process. Before the plates become accessible to the public, the Gauteng government will conduct a pilot programme on its fleet of vehicles, known as the G-fleet. This trial will allow authorities to assess the effectiveness of the new plates in real-world conditions. The South African government has exempted G-fleet vehicles from existing number plate regulations to facilitate this pilot.
Features of the new plates
According to Gauteng News, the new number plates are not only tamper-proof but also equipped with advanced security features to make fraudulent duplication nearly impossible. Key elements include:
- Red characters and border: The bold red design immediately sets these plates apart, making them easily identifiable.
- Barcode authentication: A barcode embedded on the left side of the plate links to manufacturing information, enabling authorities to track and authenticate the plate.
- Self-destructing decal: A security decal is permanently affixed to the plate. If tampering is attempted, the decal self-destructs, ensuring the plate cannot be reused.
- Additional security markings: The plates display a South African flag, ZA mark, Gauteng license mark, and a South African Bureau of Standards mark.

While the exact timeline for the broader roll-out to the public remains unclear, the introduction of these advanced number plates represents a promising development in the fight against vehicle-related crime. It will be interesting to observe how this innovative strategy unfolds and its potential impact on road safety and public security going forward.
