Volvo: Committed to truck safety on South African roads

Volvo Trucks’s research emphasises the importance of having attentive drivers behind the wheel.

With more trucks on the roads, understanding common accidents is crucial.

Volvo Trucks’s research highlights the importance of enhanced safety systems, improved road infrastructure and increased driver and road user awareness.

The driver’s role cannot be underestimated despite the support he receives from the various safety systems that equip modern trucks.

Volvo emphasises that attentive drivers are the primary safety system in a truck. Advanced driver-assistance systems like automated emergency braking and lane-keeping support further enhance safety.

Understanding and preventing common truck accidents

• Collision with an oncoming car: Often caused by speeding, inattention or improper overtaking.

• Intersection accident: Caused by failure to yield, speeding or limited visibility.

• Crossing pedestrian: Occurs when pedestrians misjudge the truck’s speed or visibility is limited.

• Lane departure accidents: Result from driver fatigue, inattention or swerving to avoid obstacles.

• Rear-end collisions: Caused by inattention or following too closely, especially on slippery roads.

Volvo Trucks design smart safety systems to monitor truck behaviour and surrounding traffic. These systems predict hazards and react to support drivers, promoting safety for everyone on the road.
