Stellantis NV has unveiled STLA AutoDrive 1.0, its first in-house developed automated driving system, offering hands-free and eyes-off (SAE Level 3) functionality.

STLA AutoDrive enables automated driving up to 60 km/h, ideal for congested urban environments. It reduces driver workload in stop-and-go traffic, freeing up valuable time for other activities. Commuters can use this time to watch a movie, catch up on emails, read or simply relax.

“Helping drivers make the best use of their time is a priority,” says Ned Curic, Stellantis’s chief engineering and technology officer. “By handling routine driving tasks, STLA AutoDrive will enhance the driving experience, making time behind the wheel more efficient and enjoyable.”

How the AutoDrive works

When traffic and environmental conditions are suitable, drivers are notified that STLA AutoDrive is available. After activating the system with a button, it takes control managing speed, steering and braking while maintaining safe distances, seamlessly adapting to traffic flow.

STLA AutoDrive uses advanced sensors to continuously monitor its surroundings, ensuring accurate awareness and reliable operation, even at night or in challenging weather like light rain or road spray. An automated sensor-cleaning system maintains optimal performance.

At higher speeds, STLA AutoDrive offers adaptive cruise control and lane centering in Level 2 (hands-on) and Level 2+ (hands-off, eyes-on) modes.

Scalability and future enhancements

Built on a scalable architecture, STLA AutoDrive can be adapted for global markets and deployed across Stellantis vehicles. Its cloud connectivity allows continuous improvement through over-the-air updates and real-time data integration.

Future developments

STLA AutoDrive is an evolving platform, with future advancements potentially including:

• Hands-free and eyes-off operation at higher speeds, up to 95 km/h.

• Enhanced off-road automation for select models.
