Hybrid cars dominate used NEV sales as EVs become more accessible
Recent data from AutoTrader reveals a significant trend in the South African used car market: hybrid vehicles are outselling electric vehicles (EVs), while EVs are becoming increasingly attainable.
AutoTrader’s data shows hybrid sales surged in 2024, outpacing EVs and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). This growth is attributed to falling prices and increased consumer demand for eco-friendly alternatives.
As manufacturers pursue an electric future, hybrids and PHEVs are crucial transitional technologies. This shift reflects evolving consumer preferences and the growing adoption of new energy vehicles (NEVs).
The South African government’s commitment to electric vehicle production, including tax incentives, is expected to drive further growth in the NEV market. Increased investment from global automakers, particularly those from China, will likely introduce more affordable EVs, accelerating adoption nationwide.
“SA’s growing interest in new energy vehicles demonstrates a strong desire for sustainable mobility solutions,” says George Mienie, the CEO of AutoTrader. “We are witnessing a significant rise in hybrid and plug-in hybrid adoption, as consumers seek efficient and environmentally friendly options.”
Used NEV sales saw a remarkable 92% year-on-year increase in 2024. While charging infrastructure remains a concern, advancements in charging station availability are addressing this challenge. Initiatives like the introduction of solar-powered EV chargers on major routes are making EV ownership more convenient.
The Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid emerged as the SA’s top-selling used NEV, praised for its affordability, efficiency and range. With an average selling price significantly lower than the overall NEV average, it represents excellent value.
Hybrids accounted for 83% of used NEV sales, highlighting their current popularity. Despite EVs being listed at higher average prices, their sold prices are decreasing, indicating improved affordability. The average price of used hybrids decreased by 14% in 2024, driving a 96% increase in sales.

EV listings and sales also experienced growth. The average listing and sale prices of EVs have declined, making them more accessible. BMW leads the used EV market, while the Volvo EX30 is the best-selling EV model.
“The continued growth of EVs and their decreasing prices show we are making electric mobility more accessible,” Mienie says. “We are monitoring this shift, as affordability and innovation drive the future of mobility.”
