VW finally unveils new SA-built compact crossover
Serving as the debut model in Volkswagen's T SUV line-up, the new crossover is built on the MQB A0 platform, shared with the Polo and T-Cross.
At Volkswagen South Africa’s 2025 Indaba, we were afforded a glimpse of the firm’s upcoming sub-compact SUV. Now, Volkswagen has finally whipped the wraps off the new Polo-based crossover in Brazil. Here’s what we know so far…

Volkswagen’s box-fresh compact crossover will be built in Brazil, where it is dubbed Tera, and at the German marque’s Kariega manufacturing facility in South Africa. However, it is worth noting that the third Volkswagen model assembled in South Africa — along with the Polo hatch and Polo Vivo — will don a different denomination, chosen by South Africans, in South Africa. Indeed, in March, the local arm of the Wolfsburg-based brand will launch a campaign where South Africans choose which of four still-to-be-announced names they prefer for the small crossover.
Positioned as the opening gambit to Volkswagen’s T SUV model line-up, the newcomer sits on the same MQB A0 platform as the Polo and T-Cross. Though Volkswagen has yet to reveal powertrain options, we expect the box-fresh offering will be available with the same engines as the cars with which it shares its underpinnings.

As a reminder, the Polo and T-Cross are available with the automaker’s 1l, three-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit, producing 70kW/175 N.m in the five-speed manual models and 85kW/200N.m in the derivatives equipped with the firm’s seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Likewise, we expect the local range will be available in base, Life, Style and R-Line levels of specification. Standard convenience and safety features have yet to be announced. However, the model shown in the images released by Motor1, which we expect is the flagship derivative, sports a multifunction steering wheel, digital instrumentation, a large touchscreen infotainment display and automatic climate control. LED head- and taillamps, and diamond-cut allow wheels are also present on the car seen here.
