Nissan debuts Frontier Pro plug-in hybrid

Nissan whipped the wraps off the Frontier Pro plug-in hybrid bakkie at Auto Shanghai 2025. Here’s what you can expect…

The first Nissan to employ a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, the Frontier Pro PHEV’s petrol-electric arrangement, which comprises a 1.5l, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine and an electric motor (the latter of which incorporated into the transmission), produces a healthy 300kW and 800N.m of twisting force, figures that are broadly comparable to that of BYD’s recently launched (R959 900) Shark 6 PHEV double cab. As a reminder, the latter bakkie’s 1.5l PHEV configuration churns out 321kW and 650N.m.

According to the Japanese automaker, the new-energy Frontier Pro offers a targeted, all-electric operating range of up to 135km (on the NEDC cycle) when its battery pack is fully charged. In addition, the Nissan’s PHEV setup offers ‘vehicle-to-load’ functionality, which supplies up to 6kW for charging household items.

The Frontier Pro PHEV’s all-paw drivetrain, which automatically distributes torque between the fore and aft axles, features a quartet of driving modes (‘Hybrid’, ‘Pure electric’, ‘Performance’ and ‘Snow’) and incorporates an electromechanical rear differential lock for enhanced off-road capability.

The Frontier Pro PHEV measures 5 520mm long, front to rear, and 1 960mm in width. For comparison, that makes it 260mm longer and 40mm wider than the current-generation Navara. In addition, the electrified Nissan double cab’s wheelbase spans 3 300mm (an increase of 150mm over the Navara). As standard, all variants are equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels, shod in 265/65-size tyres.

Stepping inside, the petrol-electric pickup’s facia is dominated by a landscape-oriented, 14.6-inch, touch-enabled infotainment screen. A 10-inch LCD digital driver’s display is also present. The Frontier Pro PHEV further features heating and ventilation for the front pews (massaging functionality is available, too) and ambient lighting.
