ABT revives the Audi Ur-Quattro with a 390kW restomod

ABT Sportsline has turned back the clock to the golden era of rallying with a tasteful reinterpretation of the Audi Ur-Quattro.

Best known for its work on modern VW Group cars, the German tuner has now created a limited-run restomod that channels the spirit of the ‘80s while packing serious modern firepower.

Unveiled at the ‘Friends of AB’ event in Germany, the project was met with overwhelming demand. All 25 originally planned units sold out in just three hours, prompting ABT to increase production to 30 cars. Each example will be built by hand and tailored to its buyer, and while ABT hasn’t released pricing, it is unlikely to come cheap.

This restomod is a passion project for ABT CEO Hans-Jürgen Abt, who has a personal history with the original Ur-Quattro. After inheriting the car from his father, he began modifying it with wider arches, lightweight magnesium wheels, and Sport Quattro parts like the grille and headlights. Those personal touches now form the foundation for this production model.

Visually, the car takes cues from both the standard Ur-Quattro and the legendary short-wheelbase Audi Sport Quattro, the latter built in small numbers for Group B rally homologation. While ABT’s car retains the Ur-Quattro’s longer wheelbase, a redesigned nose and aggressive body kit give it a clear Sport Quattro vibe. Just 214 Sport Quattros were made — only 164 were road-legal — so this restomod is intended to offer a rare opportunity to get close to that icon without tracking down one of those elusive originals.

The bodywork is made from Kevlar and carbon fibre, incorporating wide fenders, new bumpers, a vented bonnet, and a large rear wing. Inside, bucket seats and a discreet integrated roll cage set the tone, while ABT’s Individual Programme allows each customer to customise the cabin to their taste.

Powering the car is a 2.5l turbocharged five-cylinder engine borrowed from a modern Audi RS model — likely the RS3 or TT RS. ABT has tuned it to produce 390kW, a massive leap from the original Ur-Quattro’s 147kW and even well beyond the 225kW of the factory Sport Quattro. That means nearly triple the output of the ‘80s classic, delivered through a modernised quattro all-wheel-drive system.

To keep all that power in check, ABT has fitted anti-lock brakes, although it hasn’t detailed suspension upgrades. Each car reportedly gets its own unique chassis setup.
