New Chery sub-brand electric and plug-in hybrid models debuted in Beijing as the brand prepares to expand its presence in South Africa.

The real standout of the selection of new models at the Lepas stand was the L6 EV. The all-electric version of the L6 features several model-specific design cues to differentiate it from the internal combustion-only and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) L6 variants. The most notable of the latter comes in the shape of a unique front facia featuring sharply styled headlamps, replete with new LED daytime-running lights, and more angular bumper. The carmaker has yet to release more details surrounding the L6 EV’s powertrain. Whether this model will make its way to South Africa remains unconfirmed.

Lepas’ local arm has confirmed the L6 LSH will arrive in SA before the end of 2026. The L6 LSH’s PHEV powertrain comprises a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine and a single electric motor. The setup produces a combined power output of 205kW. The company claims an average combined fuel consumption of 5.0L/100km and a combined range of 1 300km.

As yet unconfirmed for our market, the L4 EV takes a similar approach to design as the L6 EV; differentiating itself from its non-EV sibling, which CAR mag sampled in March, with several model-specific styling cues. The battery-electric L4 features a front-wheel drivetrain.
