Schools rugby: Gimmies conquer Grey Bloem
Here is a round-up of the weekend's schools rugby scores.
Grey College suffered their first home loss since 2017, while there were wins for Affies, Kearsney, Queen’s, Paarl Boys’ and Paul Roos on Saturday.
Gimmies scored seven tries in a famous 43-31 victory against Grey Bloem, with captain and outside centre Markus Muller and winger Johan Kleynhans each scoring two tries.
The teams went into at half-time locked at 24-24, but Gimmies dominated the final 20 minutes of the match, scoring a crucial long-range try in the 59th minute when leading 29-24.
Grey’s previous home defeat came against Paarl Boys’ (46-31) eight years ago.
In Pretoria, Affies scored six tries to claim a 41-25 win against hosts Garsfontein. Five of them went to their forwards, with blindside flank Elwin Jansen van Vuuren grabbing a double. Flyhalf Ruben Groenewald kicked three conversions and a penalty.
No 1o Joshua Gouws starred for Garsies, scoring one of their three tries while slotting two conversions and two penalties.
Just down the road, Pretoria Boys’ suffered a 45-28 defeat to Maritzburg College.
Meanwhile in Cape Town, Paarl Boys’ ran Rondebosch ragged in a 55-12 victory, while Paul Roos also picked up a big away win against Bishops (41-10).
SACS slumped to a 29-7 home defeat to Stellenberg and Wynberg won a high-scoring match at Durbanville 37-31.
In KwaZulu-Natal, Kearsney edged Glenwood 32-31, DHS beat Northwood 22-19 and Michaelhouse hammered Zimbabwe’s Peterhouse 80-5.
In Saturday’s big matches in the Eastern Cape, Grey High smashed Dale 43-3 and Queen’s beat Selborne 40-22.
