10 Tips on how to stay warm this winter

Here are some usefull tips on how to stay extra warm this winter.

If you’re like us, you’re already tired of the cold weather and its windy stepsister.

Read these 10 tips on how to stay extra warm during the chilli winter evenings.

1. Warm yourself up

Take a warm bath, a hot shower or put on an extra layer to warm your body up first. It’s much easier to make yourself warm than to heat up your house, not to mention cheaper.

2. Wear your favourite hat

You probably have realised that when your ears are nice and warm, so is the rest of your body, so start from the top.

3. Turn on the ceiling fan

We know that this one sounds absolutely bonkers, but believe us when we say that warm air always rises to the top. By turning your ceiling fan to its lowest speed, you make the warm air come down again.

4. Block all openings

You can try and block all small openings to your house – either underneath your door or a window that won’t close properly – with a towel or something similar.

5. Change your curtains

Use thicker curtains or fleece drapes in winter to keep some of the cold away for your living area in the house. You’ll probably also sleep a bit warmer if you change your bedding to winter sheets.

6. Use your oven

In South Africa, we’re currently all trying to cut back on electricity usage, so using your oven repeatedly may not be the smartest solution. But when you are on the brink of frostbite, use your oven for cooking purposes while heating up your home as well.

7. Layer your blankets correctly

Maybe you know this already, but by having the fluffy blankets closer to your skin and the thinner ones on top, will result in a peaceful, warm rest at night.

8. Use DIY hand warmers

You can either buy hand warmers or you can use two Ziploc bags, water, and calcium chloride ice melt pellets from the hardware store.

9. Alternate between hot and cold in the shower

This is one tip that is not one of our favourites. Alternate your shower water between hot and cold to warm yourself up but to also improve blood circulation between your skin and organs.

10. Trick a locked thermostat

Not everyone has access to the thermostat in their office building. You may just need to outsmart the device by making it “think” the room is colder than it actually is. Putting ice or very cold water near it often does the trick.
