Pretorians shine in model competition

Pretoria locals finish first and second at Top Model South Africa.

Pretoria shined at this year’s Top Model SA competition, with the female winner and the male runner-up both hailing from the capital city.

Male runner-up Gerjo Oosthuizen, a financial planner from Zwavelpoort, recently told Rekord he was scouted by a photographer during a work photoshoot.

“The photographer asked me to model for a wedding-themed photoshoot he was doing,” said Oosthuizen.

“This spiralled me into taking part in my very first modelling competition, Top Model South Africa.”

Despite competing against some of the best young models in the country, the 26-year-old Oosthuizen was crowned as the runner-up.

He said his misgivings about the modelling industry turned out to be unfounded.

“I thought it would just be a bunch of snobbish people fighting with each other. This could not be further from the truth. Everyone was welcoming and kind,” he said.

Top Model South Africa CEO Suzette Marais has expressed her delight at the success of this year’s competition.

“We have grown tremendously since we started three years ago,” said Marais.

“This year’s event, which was held at Cradlestone Mall, was attended by 1 500 guests.”

Oosthuizen said the Top Model competition was his first step into a much larger world.

“I will continue with this, and hopefully take part in one of the international competitions later this year. The best is yet to come,” he said.
