Lions Clubs recognises two local optometrists

Christo, who has been an optometrist for 21 years, said eye-care was very important but some people could not afford proper treatment. “We do what we can to support those who are less fortunate.”

The Lions International Clubs in Centurion has over the years made it a fulltime commitment to uplift communities.

In fact, said Alison Hadley-DeCock, former president, said in 1937, a brave woman, Helen Keller, challenged the clubs to be “Knights for the blind”, and since the 1.4 million members worldwide had made it their mission to live up to that challenge.

Recently, two optometrist brothers from De Jagers Optometrists in Centurion received an award from the clubs in recognition of all the charity work the doctors have done in the past 20 years.

Hadley-DeCock presented the Award to Drs. André and Christo De Jager.

Hadley-DeCock said she’d been part of the clubs for 15 years tackling the challenges of the underprivileged in the Centurion communities.

“The two optometrists have been doing free work for much longer and their doors are always open to us.”

André and Christo said they didn’t expect a reward for charity, but were very excited, and appreciated the recognition for their passion and dedication.

While speaking to Rekord, Hadley-DeCock couldn’t help but mention how much the brothers have helped. “A high school pupil, had to repeat grade 3, three times before people noticed he couldn’t see properly. When the De Jager optometrists gave him his first pair of glasses, a new world opened for him. He is a shining student now.”
