Three killed, six injured in R21 collision near Boksburg

A taxi crashed into the back of a stationary truck on the East Rand.


Three people have been killed and at least six others injured when a taxi crashed into the back of a stationary truck in Boksburg, on the East Rand.

Netcare911 spokesperson Nick Dollman said at about 6.45pm, Netcare 911 dispatched paramedics to reports of a very serious collision on the R21 near the North Rand Road exit, Boksburg Advertiser reported.

“Paramedics arrived on the scene to find that a minibus taxi had smashed into the rear of a dump truck that appeared to be full of glass,” said Dollman.

“Paramedics assessed a total of nine victims at the scene, all from the one taxi. Tragically, three males have lost their lives as a result of the severe injuries that they had sustained.

“A further six victims have sustained serious to critical injuries.

“The Netcare 911 helicopter was called to the scene, and the flight crew have attended to a 27-year-old male victim who was in a critical condition with multiple serious injuries.

“He was placed on a ventilator and then airlifted to an awaiting trauma unit for further urgent care. Five other victims were transported by ambulances to hospital for further care.

“Firefighters from Ekurhuleni Emergency Services used specialised rescue equipment to cut the minibus taxi and free the victims from the wreck.”

Metro police were also on scene to investigate the incident.
