De Voest defeated in Davis Cup opener

South Africa's Davis Cup team suffered an early blow in their crucial Euro-Africa Group One tie against Slovenia with Rik de Voest going down to Blaz Rola at the Park Tivoli in Ljubljana on Friday.

Slovenia’s second-ranked player, Rola beat South Africa’s number one, at the tournament, in straight sets 6-1, 6-4, 6-4.

The loss would put added pressure on Ruan Roelofse, who has a mammoth task against Slovenia’s top-player Blaz Kavcic ranked just outside the world’s top 100.

De Voest, ranked 162nd in the world struggled on the slow clay against the talented Rola ranked 208th. Rola, the current NCAA Champion held serve throughout the match.
