Mpumalanga man stabbed to death in tavern brawl

Other patrons tried to intervene, but were allegedly attacked by the suspect’s friends and forced to flee back inside the tavern.

A 22-year-old man was arrested for stabbing a 20-year-old man to death at a popular tavern in Nhlazatshe, Mpumalanga.

The suspect, Zwelethu Nhlanhla Nhlabathi, was arrested at about 8.30am on Sunday following the crime, Mpumalanga News reported.

He allegedly had a heated argument with the deceased, Sibonelo Nkosi, at a tavern at Long Homes on Saturday night.

Elukwatini police spokesperson Sergeant Peace Mbokani said other patrons tried to intervene, but were allegedly attacked by the suspect’s friends, and were forced to flee back inside the tavern, leaving the suspect and deceased outside.

“The deceased was later found lying face down with blood spouting from his chest,” he said.

He was rushed to Embuleni hospital, where he was certified dead on arrival.

The suspect briefly appeared before the Eesterhoek Magistrates’ Court on Monday on a charge of murder.

The suspect was remanded in custody. The matter was postponed for his bail application on September 6.
