Oscar: Ballistic expert sworn in

A new witness was sworn in on Tuesday to give evidence in the murder trial of paralympian Oscar Pistorius in the High Court in Pretoria.

Captain Christian Mangena, wearing a dark suit and tie, told prosecutor Gerrie Nel he was stationed at the forensic science laboratory of the police, attached to the ballistics division.

He had 20 years’ experience in the police, 19 of them in the ballistics section.

He received in-service training in 1995 and had been working on scenes since then.

Mangena said he received the door of Pistorius’s toilet cubicle in a body bag and photographs were taken of it.

He saw four bullet holes on the door and he marked them a, b, c, and d.

Pistorius has been charged with premeditated murder after shooting his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp through the toilet door, and contravening the Firearms Control Act.

He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
