SA gymnasts haul in the gold

South African gymnasts hauled in the medals at the recent African Championships held in Namibia, winning 27 gold, 11 silver and seven bronze medals.


The contingent of 23 competed in Walvis Bay against gymnasts from Algeria, Angola, Congo, Egypt, Namibia and Tunisia.

Male senior champion Wilson Mafona won four gold medals, and was crowned the African Senior Aerobic Champion.

Together with female champion Dominique Mann, he won the mixed pairs while Mann took silver in the individual senior category.

She combined with Mafona and Terence Ledwaba to win gold in the senior trio category and the aerobic senior team also sealed first place to give Mafona his fourth gold.

In the junior aerobic competition, gymnast Nikita French won her individual age group category. The trio of Anika Zandberg, Jeanette McClaren and Nikitha French won their age group and the SA Junior Aerobic Team were also placed first in their team category.

On the trampoline, South Africa showed its dominance in the double mini category by taking gold in all but one of the four competitions.

Benjamin Radebe and Christin Hansen won the individual male and female senior categories respectively, with Candice van Rooyen taking gold in the individual junior category.

Junior female gymnast Michaela Mentz won the individual junior trampoline category.

Other gold medals came from Marli Droomer in the individual senior category, as well as Benjamin Radebe and Chezwin Timm in the synchronised senior category.

In tumbling, both male and female juniors, Ntwe Motadile and Boitshoko Rachidi, came first in their individual competitions.

Gold medals were also won by the trampoline senior female team and the double mini trampoline senior female team.
