SA rapper to play New York’s Apollo Theatre

Rapper Tumi Molekane will be making his debut at  New York City’s historic Apollo Theater on October 11

The South African hip hop star recently returned from a successful tour of Europe with French outfit Chinese Man.

The Apollo Theater was built in 1913 in the centre of Harlem, a New York neighbourhood that is home to a mostly black population.

Famous African-American performers including Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Billie Holiday, Sammy Davis Jr and James Brown helped to make the legendary venue a tourism hotspot that draws 1.3 million visitors annually.

Molekane has been invited by the World Music Institute to perform during the Africa Now! Main stage  event on October 11. The rapper will perform material from Return Of The King, his third solo album, which will be released next month

The Soil and Simphiwe Dana will also represent South Africa at the event, which will be hosted by Hugh Masakela.
