Mduduzi Manana resigns following assault scandal

The minister is facing charges of assault after beating a woman at a club in Fourways earlier this month.

The presidency released a statement on Satursay morning thanking Manana for his contribution to government during his tenure as deputy minister of higher education and training

Manana’s resignation comes in the wake of him facing charges for hitting two women at Cubana Lounge in Fourways.

The assault occurred after Manana got into a heated argument with Mandisa Duma over the ANC succession race. She allegedly called Manana gay and he called this a provocation to attack the woman.

Leaked audio saw Manana confessing to the incident and telling the victim’s brother he had “just slapped the woman”.

Manana appears to have a history of assault after another woman came forward to relay an incident in which he had an altercation with her at an Ermelo night spot. Both opened charges against each other but these were dropped, police confirmed.

Manana has since apologised for the Cubana incident and appeared in court. His next court date is September 13.
