Cops warn of Ford Kuga scam

The perpetrators claim to be part of the ‘recall team’ that is collecting the Ford Kugas.

Villieria police in Pretoria have issued a warning about a new scam targeting Ford Kuga owners, Pretoria Moot Rekord reports.

Police spokesperson Captain Coba Brits said the culprits were cashing in on a recall by Ford of its Kuga product because of problems that cause the cars to catch fire.

A Ford Kuga owner was recently contacted and told that Ford will send someone to collect the car as part of the recall.

“A young man claiming to be Wayne arrived as organised and collected the car, but the victim became suspicious and called Ford,” she said.

“Ford knew nothing about the agreement, and the target immediately contacted Tracker.”

Brits said the vehicle was recovered.

“Fortunately, the car was found in good shape, but the suspect is still on the run.”

Brits said criminals impersonated anyone from service providers, law enforcement, handymen, municipal workers, business representatives and many more to push their agendas.

“Police and in specific crime prevention officers should at all levels of interaction regularly sensitise our communities,” she said.

“People in general must develop a habit of questioning and verifying the integrity of representatives before allowing them access.”

She urged the public to warn their policyholders about these types of scams and to confirm details before just handing over a vehicle.
