Elderly man attacked in Mpumalanga farm invasion

After they had fled, the 72-year-old managed to free himself of his bonds and contact the police.


No arrests have been made following the attack on an elderly man on Sunday morning. The 72-year-old David Hempson was attacked by six armed men in his bedroom, reports Lowvelder.

According to Brig Leonard Hlathi, they attacked the aged farmer and bound him with ropes in his bedroom.

“He was woken by six men in his bedroom at about 12.30am. Two of them were armed.”

The men then threatened to kill Hempson if he did not hand over his cash and firearms.

“He then agreed to give them an undisclosed sum of money as well as a .38 special revolver,” Hlathi said.

Before fleeing the scene, the men made off with some of Hempson’s possessions. After they had fled, he managed to free himself of his bonds and contact the police, who responded to the scene to conduct an investigation.

Hlathi said no injuries were reported, and appealed to the public to come forward with information which may lead to the apprehension of the suspects.
