Former police officer sentenced to life in prison for poisoning daughter

The SAPS says no one can think of themselves as above the law.

Constable Innocentia Mbatha (28) has been sentenced to life imprisonment for poisoning and killing one of her two children in September 2016, reports African Reporter.

KwaThema police spokesperson Const Media Khoza says Mbatha was sentenced to life imprisonment for count one and a 15-year sentence for count two by the Springs Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

The cluster commander, Maj Gen Girly Mumsy Mbele, appreciated the hard work and dedication of the investigating officer, Det Capt Fakude, in securing the life sentence.

“This will ensure that the message is sent out that no one is above the law.

“Police officers are meant to be protectors and must be trusted by their immediate families and community for protection. However, if police officers find themselves on the wrong side of the law, they will be prosecuted accordingly,” she said.
